Playing/Writing music used to be EVERYTHING for me. I started off writing songs in 9th grade, with an acoustic guitar and a notebook. I was never a good singer, nor a good musician, all I knew was that I had these songs in my head, and I was always wanting to get them recorded so I could have a collection of them. At times I would lock myself in my room for 2 days and do nothing but work out a couple of songs, playing and re-writing different choruses, licks, and verses. I started off with pop/hip-hop tracks and I got any talented friends around me to be my guinea pigs. Problem was, nobody seemed to take it seriously. I was absolutely determined to get the exact sound I had in my head recorded on tape, so I pursued the project on my own.
I ended up in San Diego for college and finally found some other guys who wanted to write music too. I suddenly found myself in a rock band… problem was, nobody wanted to sing. So I picked it up myself. After that moment I found myself in various bands, always in pursuit of recording the perfect set of songs. I’ll never forget the first time I left a studio with a good recording. My band and I sat in my car and cranked up the stereo to as loud as it could get. It was maybe 2am and the stars were out in Brea.
Things eventually started to slow down, the novelty of an all Korean-American rock group faded, and age kicked in.
I had finally gotten a recording of a song that sounded just like it had in my head. We started submitting the demo out to various places, and in a blur we were traveling across America, landed some gigs on the Warped Tour, and started getting press in different publications. It was amazing.
Things eventually started to slow down, the novelty of an all Korean-American rock group faded, and age kicked in. Band members were busy with work, and the strain of bills started to affect all of us. I stopped playing music in 2006, thinking I would come back to it soon. I went cold turkey and haven’t touched a guitar in 3 years. Finally, I’m starting to miss it.
